File your Homestead Exemption with your county appraisal district
This can reduce your home's taxable value by up to $100,000 for school district taxes (as of recent legislation). You must own and occupy the home as your principal residence on January 1 of the tax year.
File by April 30 of the year following your move-in
Texas requires the exemption to be filed with your county's Central Appraisal District (CAD). Most counties offer online filing. Search '[your county] appraisal district' to find your local CAD.
Understand the Over-65 or Disability exemption if applicable
Texas offers additional exemptions for homeowners 65+ and those with disabilities. These can further reduce your taxable value and cap school tax increases.
Keep your exemption documentation
Save a copy of your approved exemption. If you refinance, sell, or rent out the home, the exemption rules change.
